How scan and pay works in Indian retail

Scan and pay is not new around the world, but Indian stores have their own needs: UPI as the default way to pay, GST invoices, guards at the exit, crowded weekends and patchy mobile signal inside large stores. Here is how each of these is handled.

Payments: UPI first

Most Indian shoppers already pay by UPI, which makes paying on the phone natural. QwikExit accepts UPI, cards and wallets through Razorpay, an RBI authorised payment aggregator. The money settles into the retailer’s own account, and gateway charges are the same kind the store already pays on its card machine.

GST invoices

Every purchase gets a digital GST invoice, saved in the shopper’s app. Returns work exactly as they do today: the shopper brings the item and the invoice, and the store follows its own return policy.

The exit check

Indian stores already have guards at the door, and scan and pay uses them. The shopper shows a signed exit pass. The guard scans it with the QwikExit Store app on a smartphone and sees the item count, item types and price band, so a basket that does not match stands out. Passes expire within minutes and cannot be reused.

Weak signal inside the store

Large stores, basements and malls often have poor mobile signal. The QwikExit app keeps the store catalogue on the phone, so scanning works even on a weak signal. Only payment needs a connection.

Privacy and the DPDP Act

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 sets rules for shopper data. QwikExit keeps every optional use of data off until the shopper turns it on, stores data in India, and lets shoppers download or delete their data from the app. Stores and brands see anonymous totals, not individual shoppers. Our privacy policy has the details.

Which Indian stores it suits

Supermarkets and grocery chains with packaged goods, premium grocery, value fashion and hypermarkets, especially those with weekend queues in cities and large towns. Read more on self checkout for retail stores.
