How to reduce checkout queues in a retail store
A long billing queue costs more than patience. Some shoppers see it and leave, others put items back to finish faster, and many do not come back on the next busy day. Here are the options stores use, from the simplest to the biggest change.
1. Staff counters to your peak hours
Look at your billing data by hour and day. Most stores have a few predictable peaks, such as weekend evenings. Moving cashier shifts to match them is free, but it only works up to the number of counters you have.
2. Open express counters
A counter for small baskets keeps quick shoppers from waiting behind full trolleys. It needs a cashier and a counter, and it still becomes a queue when the store is crowded.
3. Make paying faster
Display a UPI QR at every counter, keep card machines working and have change ready. Every second saved at payment helps the whole line.
4. Add self checkout kiosks
Kiosks let shoppers scan and pay without a cashier. They need upfront hardware, floor space and an attendant, and shoppers can still queue for a free kiosk. Compare them in scan and pay vs self checkout kiosks.
5. Let shoppers pay on their phone
With mobile scan and pay, shoppers scan items with their own phone as they shop and pay in the app. They skip the billing line completely and only pass a quick exit check. It needs no hardware, and it works well alongside your counters. This is what QwikExit does.
Measure what the queue costs you
To see whether a change is worth it, estimate your loss: daily footfall, times the share who reach the counter, times the share who walk out because of the queue, times your average bill, times 30 days. For example, 60 walkouts a day at an average bill of ₹450 is about ₹8 lakh of lost sales a month. These are example figures. Measure your own before and after any change.
Try it in one of your stores. A 30 day pilot runs as an express lane next to your existing counters, and we measure the difference against a similar store.

Common questions
How can retailers reduce checkout queues?
Staff counters to peak hours, open express counters for small baskets, make payment faster with UPI, add self checkout kiosks, or let shoppers scan and pay on their own phone so they skip the billing line.
What is the fastest way to cut weekend billing queues without hiring?
Moving small baskets out of the counter line. Mobile scan and pay does this without buying hardware, because shoppers check out on their own phone and only pass a quick exit check.
